Dallas folks are no stranger to DJ Sober. From running one of Dallas top Thursday nights at Beauty Bar to DJing for Dallas Cowboys games, there is probably at least one event around town that you could have seen him playing at.
Sober is also a very talented illustrator so we typically work very close together on the direction for each design. Our process is typically started with a volleying brainstorm session then followed by rough sketches and finals.
Flyers, posters, mixtape covers, stamps & stickers are just a few of the items I've had the privilege of creating for one of Texas' best DJs.
Atmosphere is one of indie hip-hop's most well known and best travelled groups from the midwest. Almost 20 years of touring the country and the world independently has earned them many fans and much success. In early 2016 the group embarked on an all Texas tour and I had the honor of creating their tour t-shirt. I was asked to create something that really embodied my Texas-style art.
The armadillo was an easy choice being the state animal and of combining it with a skull just came naturally as that is part of my usual drawing style.
The final turned out very different from the sketch because I didn't get the skull idea until I was already in the digital step of the design. You never really know how things will change during the process.
Today, many people recognize The Roots as the band from The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, but I grew up listening to their albums and have been a huge fan for a couple decades. When presented with the opportunity to work on some art for the band as well as the drummer of the group, Questlove, I had to hide some excitement.
Quest is known for having an engaging online presence, an amazing ear for good music, and hair as big as his love for drumming. Creating his anniversary tour flyer was very fun since he would post a new version of it every morning on Instagram.
I got to draw likenesses of the band members, create logo types for their festival, The Roots Picnic, and a lot of other cool in between items that I am very happy to show off.
Hailing from the great city of Jacksonville, FL, Astronautalis has travelled the world spreading his music and growing his fanbase into more of a friend base. In the past 15 years of making songs and touring album after album I have had a wonderful chance to create a couple of pieces of his merch table loot.
Astronautalis asked me to create a couple very special items due to his belief that they were perfect projects for my hand drawn style.
These items span across his last two releases, This Is Our Science and Cut The Body Loose. Along side a hoodie & t-shirt design, I got to reimagine the Florida flag with a brand new seal depicting the rapper in place of the Seminole woman. The flags were used as part of the special pre-order package.
