A few days ago I logged on to my Twitter account and scrolled past most of the hundreds of posts I had missed between logins like I always do. I like to travel backwards through my timeline hoping to find something really cool that I had missed out on but usually find myself ignoring everything just like I had every time before. Something caught my eye this time. I noticed that one of my favorite rappers, Jean Grae, had angrily tweeted asking why people were still mad that fellow rapper, Talib Kweli, had done a song with Gucci Mane. Personally, I didn’t even know that this collaboration had happened, but I found the question posed very interesting.

I decided that I should answer her question with my best educated guess: people are upset that an emcee who had based the first half of his career dissing and talking shit about uneducated rappers (who make a living off of hip-hop by creating music more akin to pop than the culture we loved so much), actually doing a song with one of these rappers. It has nothing to do with the commercial status of Gucci Mane, it’s simply that Kweli’s fans are usually not fans of the kind of music that Gucci makes. To me, Gucci Mane is fucking terrible. Kweli isn’t the greatest rapper in the world, but I would rather listen to his worst songs in a torture chamber than have to listen to Icy. At this point I started getting replies from strangers who had read the argument and agreed with my statements.

That argument actually didn’t even get a response from her at all. Her responses only came after I told her that I personally didn’t give a fuck because Kweli was a jerk when I met him and I had no respect for him. You know, it’s not even really that he was a jerk that made me lose my respect for him, but rather the terrible direction he had taken his music in pursuit of a buck or two. Ms. Grae was not pleased with my comment and responded with a generic, “hey that’s my friend you’re talking about!” Now, I understand that Kweli is a friend of hers but I have friends who are assholes too. If you were to tell me that my brother was a dick to you when you met him I would probably shake my head and reply, “yeah, they’ll do that.” He is my brother and I love him, but he can be a fucking dick! I know this! Jean Grae should be fully aware of the fact that Talib Kweli is a dick! I quickly replied back that I apologized for calling her friend a jerk but that is was simply the truth.

She didn’t accept my apology and blocked me immediately. The funniest thing to me out of this whole situation is a little story that I left off of Twitter because I didn’t want to drag any innocents into this. Last year at SXSW in Austin a few of my friends were hanging out with Grae and Kweli ended up with them at one point. He proceeded to be a complete dick head to my friends for absolutely no reason at all! He had no shame! He walked right up and was the biggest asshole and it was very obvious that he was a natural at it. Hey, that’s fine with me, but Grae admitted to my friends that he was a dick right there and then. So if you know you’re friend is an asshole, I don’t think you should be allowed to take offense to that. She admits all of the time that she is an asshole on Twitter but if you call her friend one (who actually is a huge douche), she will block you. Beware my friends, some people take Twitter way too serious.

This video is a beautifully shot eight and a half minute long hypnotic look inside a DSLR lens. I personally wouldn’t try to attempt the hack because I’m lazy and clumsy. Not exactly traits of a craftsman. I’d go for the reversing rings and just flip the lens around. See, lazy.

I’m sure you’ve all seen this radical lunch box floating around the lazernet the last few days. You would think Activision would have learned from the disaster that was DJ Hero, but apparently they haven’t failed hard enough to discourage them from making DJ Hero 2. Tackling people’s complaints about the first one, such as the fact that the game is not fun with groups, they have added a second and third player who will handle another turntable controller and a microphone. I mean, I understand that they are trying to appeal to a broader market but I honestly feel like people that are into mash-ups and dance music would much rather go to a club and/or just listen to the music for fun. Despite the fact that this is a “DJ” game, there are very few actual DJs or hip-hop heads who really liked the original. Parappa the Rapper kept it realer than DJ Hero has ever had a chance to. Overall, the first game was hard to play and felt nothing like you were actually DJing. Between the single turntable with buttons on top of the record and the stiff, jagged movements they require for you to scratch, you feel more like an old woman at a club inappropriately signaling to the DJ that horrible, two-handed wave, which has become the universal moron sign for “DJ”. If I were you, I’d steer clear of this (most likely) terrible sequel.

Sometimes a “live and let live” mindset can cause you to follow a path that was not meant for you. Luckily, we are not those kind of people. Now that we’ve put your relationship to the test and you have found that you did in-fact marry the wrong person, it’s time to take it all one step further. Here are 10 reasons you should have your ex deported.

5. After finally achieving a state of civility with your kid’s mom, your spouse says to her at a family BBQ, “Your son doesn’t really look like him at all, are you sure it’s his?”

6. You logged into your Xbox live account and have messages from a stranger saying, “Are you still coming to ride me in my hot tub?”, and she just went to Argentina for a month to go “horse back riding.”

7. You gave up awesome sex with your would-be mistress for disgustingly oversized, looks-like-an-unrolled-pack-of-Carl-Budding-ham-labia flapping in the wind, let-me-fake-another-orgasm-bullshit. Oh yeah, just because you scratch me, doesn’t make it sexy. Lamest in bed. You rule at it…in-fact it’s one of the only things you’re good at. Ask anyone you had sex with.

8. You found out she worked for a porn website masturbating online for creepy old dudes. This was the only job she could ever get on her own, and still lost it a month later.

By sneaker chance or fate or intention, the lusciously green Nike SB Dunk High “Skunk” will be dropping at midnight on April 20 (420) at Brooklyn Projects. Coincidentally, aside from what seems like a green brushed suede upper which is reminiscent of cannabis, the “skunk” can be a perfect allusion to the funky whiff of the official 420 substance as well (although, some might beg to differ that the 420 greens smells deliciously far from the skunk stench). Regardless, the upcoming release does feature a funky mix of greens and purple with tonal soles to match. Of course, paying tribute to the “Skunks”, the insoles feature Nike’s new fetid buddy, the namesake skunk. Don’t start your celebrations too soon so you won’t have to kick yourself when you miss the release– all rejoicing can be done after you have the gorgeous greens tucked under your arms

Whether or not your rockin the greens or tokin them, these are actually a pretty nice pair of sneaks to rock while tokin them. Sorry for not posting this sooner, but you know why I forgot.

This coming from a douchey white girl who thinks it’s okay to walk into a South Jersey Soul Food restaraunt and yell to her other douchey white friends, “WHAT UP MY NIGGAS?!” On a side note, nobody is interested in how well travelled and expensive your useless education was, you 1-uppity, skanky, over sized labia tucking, self-centered, gullible, I-believe-people-like-me, cheesy – as in butthole smell, fake ass bitch. If you are so well educated, then why do you still wipe from back to front?

Back in 2005, I was wrapping my album Songs About You, touring with Atmosphere and practically living in Rob Viktum‘s studio doing nothing but making music. In between working on stuff from our group The Socialists and working with every other artist in the DFW area, Rob was working on his own instrumental album. For some unknown reason, he never released the final product. Hell, I had never even heard it. Today Mega Royal Records is releasing his album, Mechanized Burden, as a free download so everyone can enjoy this project that Rob put so much hard work into. Fresher Than hooked up with Mr. Dibbs & Wreckin’ Ball once again for some love advice. This time they take on the terrain of the touring musician venues in an all out safari hunt to reveal the hidden secrets of the elusive groupie.

As we embark upon this grand journey into the world of groupies we find that there are very many different types on the prowl. After many years of being on the road and working in bars, we’ve witnessed these mythical creatures in their natural habitat, first hand. We narrowed down this list to three groups that we’ve seen and heard of.

1. The Souveneir Groupie
2. The Hopeless Romantic
3. The Opportunist/Attention Whore

You may have seen these creatures hiding amongst a crowd and not known it. Here are ways to identify them.

The Souvenir Groupie –
The Souvenir Groupie is a very rare breed, but can still be found from time to time. This breed tends to be spotted near the merch booth. They are easily spotted by their willingness to stoop as low as giving a dirty, unwashed roadie head for that “tour only t-shirt”.

The Hopeless Romantic Groupie –
The Hopeless Romantic is a very common breed of groupie. They can be spotted right up front at the show or huddling in the back row crying. They do this because they know that this song is written just for them. Sometimes you don’t need to hunt for them as they have stalked you online, and molded themselves to fit what they believe is your perfect mate.

The Opportunist/Attention Whore –
The Opportunist/Attention Whore sees the benefit of dating you. You’re useful until she/he has what she/he wants. In all cases, it simply boils down to this: The Opportunist/Attention Whore has absolutely no God given talent and thinks they’re awesome, so they deserve attention. Tons of attention, from everyone. But be very careful, they are a tricky breed! In their mind, they are smarter, better looking and deserve everything you have, no matter how stupid or bitchy they come off in front of people. They are a fascinating creature!

Here is a classic scenario involving the Opportunist/Attention Whore
Day 1: You meet her/him via your friend on Warped Tour and she/he has no interest in you at all.
Day 2: They find out you’re in [insert band here], bring you a drink on stage, hang out all day, buy you dinner, then make out with you on the street.
Day 3: They pop up at a show that is 6 hrs from their home, you fuck them in the ass in the back of the tour bus, they give you head and swallow. yes groupies do go ass to mouth…welcome to the ATM.

Here are some sure shot ways to identify the Opportunist/Attention Whore:

1. On their first visit to your home he/she puts the title mrs. or mr. in front of your stage name and wears it on a homemade t-shirt.
2. They can’t remember your name and refer to you as “Mr. Biggs” and has to ask their friend what your name is.
3. They randomly pop up at shows all over the country without letting you know.
4. They insist you ask if you can hook them up with a merch or managing job on your upcoming tour.
5. They insist that the label you and your brother started should be run by her, thus fucking the label into a dead standstill.
6. When you find out they’ve dated or “entertained” members of multiple bands from Florida to Boston as just friends ::wink wink::
7. They want you to make a song for them on your new LP
8. When they get to work as merch person, and manage to piss everyone off by being an “i know more than you asshole” to everyone on the tour AKA a one-upper
9. When you find out they wipe from back to front.
10. He/she has scene jumped from Limp Bizkit to Rock to Ska to Dub to Punk to Hardcore to Hip-hop to “Hey look at me, now I’m a DJ” to Hipster to Hippie to Now I’m a fucking coke head.
11. He/she offers you a three way with the front man of the band your touring with i.e. I wanna fuck your boss so I can get further ahead.
12. When all your friends have already told you, “shes a groupie.”
13. He/she calls the day of every relevant show to get his/her +5 friends on the guest list 4 hours before the show.
14. They have conversations with themselves on your message board saying how they’re your girlfriend/boyfriend.

Some groupies and bands have a symbiotic relationship that might be easily missed. The easy way to spot this is by watching out for the Groupie Secret Code. Here are a few codes to say “hey, let’s fuck”

“Ever been on a tour bus?”
“Wanna hang out after the show…on the bus?”
“Hey, pretend to be my girlfriend/boyfriend so i can get rid of this other chick/dude”
“Can I come to your house and make cookies and hang out?” Thanks, AFI, time and time again.
“Why don’t you come into town early and hang out, since you the have the day off.”
“Hey, our next show is in [insert city here], you should come and I’ll put you on the list.”
…and pretty much anytime a band member opens their mouth to the opposite sex.

Next time you’re out at a bar, watching your favorite band, you can keep an eye out for groupies! Stay clear as they will relentlessly try to fuck up your life. Good luck!

When on a first date with a girl, people might ask themselves a few questions. Where should I take her? What should we eat? How do I make the first move? The answers to these questions are usually simple so we have some words of advice. Make sure you pick the right girl. We suggest finding the first chick to pull out her switch blade when the shit goes down. You know you picked the wrong girl if she tries to give her opinion. Always take her to a dive bar or greasy spoon where you know the bartender. This way you can hook up with the bartender later if your date turns out to be a lumbering Earth pig. Never eat anything that will make your ass cannon explode or make you smell like a moose dick wrapped in burnt baby skin. The first move can be made by casually leaning over and whispering, “you know…I used to be in Atmosphere.” If you’re not the flowers and candy kind of guy, there’s always alternatives. Try Viagra and a donkey punch or a roofie and a plastic bag over your dumb ass face, bitch. Never take her back to your place. If you go to her place you can have more fun. You can pull off an upper decker, wipe your ass on a face towel and put the good side facing out so she gets shit on her hands the next time she goes to dry them, throw her cat out the window or piss in the fish bowl. You can know that your efforts have gone too far when you end up in your car in a back alley with your dick in your hand pleading, “c’mon, you know you want it! I didn’t get this in high school!”

On Valentine’s Day some people will try to take out a long time friend. There’s two types of girls to pick: the hot friend who’s really shmammered or your lonely sure shot friend who’s sober. Which to pick? Both. The lonely sure shot is always a go and even though she’s sober, she’ll never tell. If the hot drunk friend doesn’t remember it, well then it never happened. Take the lonely sober girl somewhere no one will notice. I suggest 20 miles out of town to a cash only establishment. Take the drunk hot girl to the next bar or greasy spoon on her fucking tab. What to eat? With the lonely sober girl you’re eating your pride with a side of bacon. With the hot girl, get an order of everything. She’s paying and won’t remember it anyway. When you’re ready to let her know you want to be more than friends, at least for the night, tell her, “I’m leaving for a six month tour with Atmosphere. I’d love to hang out when I get back. Can I have a kiss?” If it’s the drunken hot friend, just ask her if she’s ever seen the back of a tour bus. You’ll know it’s a go when your dick is in her mouth or she’s sitting on your face. If she turns you down, you don’t stay friends with her; you’re going on a six month tour with Atmosphere. If you’re successful, do you stay friends with her? Stay friends with who? If another friend tries to cock block, there’s an easy solution. When in doubt, knock ‘em out, Top Cats style.

Here is some long term relationship advice. Where do you take her? Take her? Take her downstairs and put her in front of the fucking stove, bitch. I don’t care what we eat but it better be good. If you want to guarantee you get laid, try roofies and restraints. The best way to spice things up in bed is to invite somebody else to join or wait ’til she falls asleep, sneak out and drive to your mistress’ house. If you’re trying to work it out, just let her know you want an open relationship. This can be a touchy subject so just tell her that she’s fucking lame in bed and you’re tired of faking orgasms so she needs to go out and get some elsewhere because she needs the practice. You know she’s trying to leave you when you find out she sucked Punk Rock Carl’s dick in his car in the parking lot of the Poison Room after the Cinci Punk Fest. If that isn’t enough, you know you should call it quits when, A: you find them OD’d on your bathroom floor, B: she’s always complaining about yeast infections and you find out she wipes her ass from back to front or, C: you’re tired of footing the bill (aka paying off their drug dealers). So what is the perfect gift for your long time partner? Divorce papers and a sawed off shotgun to the head coupled with a beautiful view from the bottom of the lake.

When is it appropriate to shit in front of each other?
For a dude, never. You can’t even stand the smell of your own shit so you should never submit her to that. For a girl, day one. In the woman’s mind, everything that comes out of her smells like roses and angel kisses.

How low will your standards go to be a good wingman?
Pretty low. As long as its not a dude, I’m good. Well maybe a hot dude.

How drunk should you get on a date?
You can get as drunk as you want as long as it’s not too drunk to fuck.

After three and a half years of living in LA, we are making our way back to Dallas for a while. Mae and I started Fresherthan here in LA and have learned a lot and love this city but just really feel like we need to make a change in our lives. We have talked about moving but really couldn’t figure out where we wanted to go. We talked about a few different cities including New York, Chicago and Austin but we couldn’t really figure out where we wanted to live. We want something new, neutral and a somewhere that is a great place to learn as much as we’ve learned here and in Texas. So we decided to get off of our ass and go SOMEWHERE. We chose Dallas for the most obvious reasons: it’s cheap and we have GREAT family there.

Once you get past the smog, traffic and assholes, LA is a great city. I actually really love LA but living here can be a pain in the ass. I will miss all of the great food, parties and people I’ve met. I am definitely going to miss Mae’s family, GCS crew and our FT fam, Amber and Luke. But fuck it, we’re young, have so much drive and so many goals that we want to meet. We really can’t afford to get comfortable and get stuck. I am really confident that this is a great move and will be a perfect stepping stone to taking over the rest of the world. Mae is from here so this is a much harder move for her, but for me it’s returning home. Or is it? Dallas has changed a lot, my friends have become different people just as I have and it really feels like a different city than the one I left.

All we can hope for is making some great moves with Fresherthan and our friends in Dallas. We hope everyone in LA continues to support us as we will continue to support and represent you.

I guess that is what I expected to hear from Versis. Here at FT we have a policy to listen to everything we are sent without discrimination, so I gave it a chance without discrimination. The song we were sent, All In, surprised me in a great way. The beat has a classic J Dilla approach with a nice bassline and a clean, cool Rhodes sound. The whole thing is very Slum Village sounding, but I don’t hold that against him. I immediately went to his myspace page to hear more.

I won’t tell you that the music is AMAZING or anything but I really like it and I would absolutely bump this on some cool out shit. Versis makes some great sounding, feel good tracks and I can’t help but be impressed (and proud) that the next generation will have people like me, who are definitely not in the majority of the music makers/listeners. I’m looking forward to hearing how this young emcee grows and reaches his full potential. Hope you enjoy it too!
