While most people don’t know who John Peel was, chances are that a band or artist you like did a session with him. One of the most influential DJ’s in music history, John Robert Parker Ravenscroft or “John Peel” served as the main music DJ for BBC 1 from 1967 until 2004. His “Peel Sessions” live recordings with up and coming bands became legendary. Showcasing everyone from Black Sabbath (1970) to the Black Keys (2003), over 4000 sessions were recorded featuring nearly 2000 artists. John Peel was also a famous collector of vinyl. At the time of his death his collection included over 26,000 LPs, and 40,000 singles. As part of a preservation project, website The Space began cataloging and documenting his entire collection. The first 100 albums of the letter “A” are up now and 100 new albums will be added weekly, letter by letter until the job is done. The website includes recordings of live radio broadcasts, photos of artists in studio, interviews, and video recordings of the man at work.
